Sooty falcons in Oman

falcon nestlingSince 2007, Natural Research has been working with its partners to survey and monitor sooty falcons nesting on the islands in the Gulf of Oman. Click here to see our sooty falcon project page, where you can download our 2010 field report. In 2010 we and our Omani partners teamed with Global concepts for conservation < http://www.globalcons.org/ >, University of Ulm, and Microwave Telemetry to fit small satellite transmitters to two juvenile sooty falcons reared on Fahal Island in early October. We monitored the movements of these two birds and posted maps and commentary on a blog. http://sootyfalconoman.blogspot.com/. The two juveniles that we tracked migrated south through central Africa. One was shot in the Democratic Republic of Congo, while the other apparently either died or lost its tag in January on the wintering grounds in Madagascar. With the continuing help of the Office for Conservation and the Environment in the Oman government, we aim to fit at least one satellite tag (the one recovered from the Congo) to another juvenile sooty falcon reared in Oman in 2011.
