Jack joined NRP as a Field Ornithologist in July 2023.
He is involved in conducting a range of generic bird surveys as well as species-specific surveys at potential wind farm and powerline sites across Scotland. He has undertaken appropriate training with NRP including height and distance estimation as well as use of SPOT messenger services, which compliment his existing background in ecological surveying.
Throughout his time in sixth form and university, Jack also gained experience working part-time as an ecologist for various consultancies. He then spent a year working as a full-time Ecologist based around Cambridge. During this time, he gained a large amount of survey experience for a range of taxa including birds, bats, newts, reptiles, badgers, terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates.
Jack’s interest in wildlife led to an ecological focus at university and he graduated from the University of East Anglia with a degree in Ecology and Conservation in 2022. His final year project focused on how climate change is impacting the phenology of Bar-tailed Godwit using Wash Wader Ringing Group data. Jack has had a lifelong interest in birds which has taken him to bird and migration hotspots all across the UK and abroad. He is also a trained bird ringer and holds a C-permit.
