Professor Des Thompson FCIEEM FRSE - with more than 30 years’ experience working in government agencies, Des was until 2023 the Principal Adviser on Biodiversity and Science with NatureScot, Scotland’s Nature Agency. Now a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow at UHI North, West and Hebrides, his interests include upland and arctic ecosystems and biodiversity science-policy decision making. He is the UN Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) COP-Appointed Councillor for Climate Change and member of its Scientific Council. He is a member (and founder Chair for ten years) of the Technical Advisory Group supporting the CMS Raptor MoU on African and Eurasian Raptors. He is a founder Trustee of the wildlife charity Restoring Upland Nature, and member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Publishing more than 15 books, he took his first degree at Paisley College (now University of West Scotland), and PhD and DSc from the University of Nottingham. Des is based in Penicuik, Midlothian.
